Bûcherons / Illegal Logging

Depuis la création de la réserve d’Hampapak par Kalaweit en collaboration avec One Voice, jamais des actes de bûcheronnage n’avaient été constatés… Mais aujourd’hui lors d’une balade en forêt qui aurait du être un plaisir je suis tombé sur ce tronc (la machette sert d’échelle). L’arbre a fraîchement été abattu et le bois (le tronc de 15 mètres) a été sorti de la forêt vraisemblablement au moment où la forêt était inondée… C’est un coup dur. L’arbre abattu non loin du lac où se trouve le projet est un message clair nous étant destiné… L’heure suivante j’ai organisé une réunion de crise avec l’équipe. Premier objectif : Arriver à mettre un nom sur les coupables.

Kalaweit travaille en étroite collaboration avec les populations locales (création d’école, aides financières, médicales et pédagogiques) pour éviter ce genre de problème. Cette fois Kalaweit doit se montrer très ferme.

Since the creation of the Hampapak Reserve by Kalaweit in collaboration with One Voice, no logging activities have been reported. But today, during a trek (which should be a pleasure...) I found this tree cut done by loggers… This tree has been cut very recently (in the middle of the reserve) and the log has already been extracted from the forest, probably when the forest was flooded. This tree is a clear message to Kalaweit…and we have to take action now. An hour after I found the tree I held a crisis meeting with the staff. First goal: we have to find the name of who did this!

Kalaweit maintain very good relations with the local communities (creation of school, annual donations, medical and education costs paid by Kalaweit) to make sure things like that do not happen… This time Kalaweit has to take strong action.
